The book studies the importance of soap during the Civil War, the subsequent chemical and technological development that took place during the 1950s and on into the twenty-first century with the establishment of the trend of responsible consumption. A HISTORY OF SOAP

Nobody knows exactly when or where soap was first made. According to Roman legend soap was discovered when rainwater flowed down the sides of Mount Sapo, alongside the Tiber. Fat residues left by the numerous animal sacrifices mixed with the ashes from the ceremonial wood fires, and the Roman slaves noted how this mixture had valuable cleaning properties, firstly for their hands and then garments.
